An ice storm coats the top of the Gateway Arch in downtown St. Louis during the major ice storm of December 1, 2006. An ice storm is caused by freezing rain, which coats everything on the ground with a glazing of ice. The tremendous weight of the ice will break tree branches, limbs and power lines - causing widespread power outages and vegetation damage. The St. Louis ice storm of 2006 left nearly 500,000 homes without power.
