Hi Dan, After reading your latest post and thinking back to your previous thoughts on this subject some months ago, I have read through this post in detail and listened to the 911 call and though I am some few thousand miles away, an unbiased opinion sometimes can't do any harm. Got to hold firm with the locals on this one and support their name of the bridge. The UK vote on the name is "The Oakwood Bridge"

Ya know, I've lived here all my life...and can obviously see that it's a bridge but never actually considered it one. I always just refered to it as the Oakwood Rd. exit.

The Bridge is an icon in Charleston, Eugene Carter was born in WV, lived his life in WV and devoted his career to establishing fairness in the labor market, and thus a tremendous civic leader. The Carter name is appropriate for this Bridge.

I believe the issue here is the fact that there is no clear designation of a name on the bridge. I believe there is only one sign, or at least that I have seen, that designates it as Eugene A. Carter Memorial Bridge, as it should be. I believe this sign can be seen as you come from Huntington into Charleston. Now mind you, this may have changed since the last time I crossed it this past summer. This lack of "signage" is where the problem occurs...the state along with, rightfully, naming the bridge should have put forth enough funds to properly mark the bridge. I believe a case in point could be the Reagan National Airport, which was once called the Washington National Airport. Nobody calls it the Washington National Airport anymore because signs designate it as the Reagan National Airport and tickets say Reagan National Airport(or whatever its three letter code might be). So therefore a simple remedy for this all would be to pay an extra couple $100 to post a couple more signs and label the bridge properly, the confusion will go away in time as the as people begin to recognize the bridge, through signs, as it should be...the Eugene A. Carter Memorial Bridge.

| I went through one of my dashcam archives and was able to find this image of the Eugene A. Carter sign on the other (north/east) side of the bridge. I had never noticed it before, so I'm not sure how long it's been up - it may have been there as long as the other one. This image was recorded on January 14 of this year:

It is my opinion that many bridges are named for persons of honor. The legislation makes it very clear that Eugene A. Carter was a person of honor and dignity. His influence on labor in the state of West Virginia is seen on every teamster driven truck that passes over this bridge, thousands a day. The bridge is appropriately named: Eugene A Carter Memorial Bridge and I agree that more signs should be erected to identify it as such.

I drive the big I-64 twice a day, there IS big green identity signs east and west bound. I like the custom of naming a bridge after someone, instead of calling the structure by its locale. The Legislature and I have some common ground, Eugene gets my vote.

It should be Carter Bridge out of respect to his family who are very proud the Legislature saw fit to honor him this way. He has family still in the area who are very proud of this fact. Mr. Carter was a living breathing person, who made a impression on people in life and in death.

Eugene A. Carter Bridge is now the official name and is deserving of a great man like Mr. Carter.
It's only a coincidence that Jimmy Hoffa came up missing in 1975 and this bridge was built in 1975. "Nothing to see here folks... move along".

I visited in West Virginia last October and spent a couple of days in Charleston. I crossed the bridge several times and noticed the signs with Mr. Carter's name. The friends we stayed with while there told us the story about Eugene Carter. The bridge is named after him now, and I think he is very worthy to have the bridge to remain named after him. By the way, loved West Virginia, beautiful state and very friendly people.

The signs are too small for anyone not paying a good deal of attention to see. Wish I had known about the vote to change the name of this bridge. It should remain named The Eugene A. Carter Memorial Bridge as it links both sides of this city, labor and management alike. Mr. Carter's family are very proud of the fact that he was honored by having a bridge named for him.

This bridge should remain the Eugene A. Carter Memorial Bridge as it has been officilly designated. He was a dedicated person and made a great impression on people. I think it would be disrespectful to his family who still live in the Charleston Area if you changed the name.

Just a clarification. There is no official push to change the name of the bridge, and that is not the intention of this article or the poll. The issue is that if you pick people at random in Charleston and ask them what this bridge is called, you get several different answers. I always thought that was odd considering how the bridge is such a prominent landmark. It's like New Yorkers not knowing what the Brooklyn Bridge is called. I was mainly curious about what most people in Charleston considered the bridge's name to be. The senate resolution has indeed made the Carter name official, and I don't intend to change that. But there is still a lot of confusion as to what most people know the bridge as. Some don't know it has a name at all, and even news articles don't call it by a consistent name. Even the state is still calling it Fort Hill in its correspondence to me. Maybe the issue is one of educating the public and encouraging the media and the state to adopt the official name every time they talk about the bridge?

I'm originally from Miami, Fl. All our bridges and streets have been renamed for Cuban individuals, most of whom never left Cuba. For once can we please leave a name with honor that deserves to remembered left on a structure that the state deemed worthy of the Carter name?

The problem with the poll now is that, as far as I can tell, it is being influenced today by a large number of visitors with apparent special interests or close ties to the Carter naming process, family or related organizations. There's nothing wrong with that, except that I don't think we may be getting a good sampling of the unbiased general public's views. The past 100 or so consecutive votes and 40 consecutive comments have been 100% Carter supportive as a result of a recent effort by a large group of like-minded people. Again, there's nothing wrong with that, but it is highly anomalous to the previous pattern of results before today. Again, I'm not discounting all these recent votes and sentiments, but it is undoubtedly skewing the results in the Carter direction whereas the results were much different before today's sudden spike in response. Either way, it's not an official poll and the results won't mean anything to the state - so whatever the outcome is, the poll is inconsequential in the end.

If you take the name Carter away, should we go back and rename all the other "people named" bridges to reflect a street nearby? The Yeager Bridge should be called MacCorkle? Let the intended honoring of our WV heroes stand.

I never knew what the bridge was called - I never refer to bridges as the so-and-so bridge. Whenever giving directions (especially to out-of-towners who are too busy watching the road to worry about a little sign announcing who the bridge is named for) "take the Oakwood Road exit that comes just as you cross the bridge". So, I guess this Charlestonian says it is called the "The" bridge. :o)
