Direct sunlight turns a tornado's funnel white as it moves east near the town of Mulvane, Kansas on June 12, 2004. The condensation funnel is still above the ground, but tornadic winds are on the surface doing damage and lofting debris into the air. In this image, wisps of condensation are beginning to appear on the ground. Tornadoes often form on the outer edge of a supercell, well away from the heavy rain and dark clouds. For the storm chaser, this allows for easy viewing from a safe spot away from the storm. Image is from video.
