Tree - Nature's Lightning Rod

Tree Damage

The tree pictured below (also in Spring Hill Cemetery) was struck by lightning possibly years ago. It has a distinctive 4-inch wide scar, along with a single groove, running the length of the trunk. As you can see in the photo, it appears that the tree has tried to re-grow bark and wood over the scar. This tree appears healthy, but the scar is infected with fungus (visible in first photo) and carpenter ants. Much of the wood along the scar has rotted. It is apparent that the tree survived the initial lightning strike (unlike the trees in the previous photos), but it may eventually succumb to the fungus and parasites that have access to the tree through its injury.
